Why Matching Window Trim Makes a Huge Difference

On this house, a couple of the windows came with a thin trim and everything else on the wall had a wider trim around it. Nobody had to point it out. You just looked at the front of the house and something felt off.

That is usually how trim works. People do not walk up and say the casing is a different width. They just say the house looks a little funny and they cannot tell you why.

The fix was framing it out

We built the thin ones out so they matched the rest. Framed them out and wrapped the whole thing in metal, so now the trim reads the same width all the way across the wall.

It is not a complicated job. It is a little bit of framing, a little bit of bending metal, and paying attention to the size you are trying to match. But you have to actually do it, and a lot of guys will just side right up to the window and move on.

Small stuff is what people notice

Siding, color, roof line, those are the things people think they are looking at. What actually makes a house look finished is whether the details line up. Even trim, straight lines, same reveals on every window.

When the widths do not match, your eye keeps stopping on it. When they do match, you stop noticing the windows at all and just see the house. That is the goal.

Ask before the siding goes on

If you have windows that do not match, say something early. Once the siding is on it becomes a bigger job to go back and fix it. Before that, it is just part of the day.

Most of the time a contractor who is willing to work with you will say yes. It is a small ask and it changes how the whole front of the house looks.
