What We Do

    Our General Contractor Services

From kitchen and bathroom remodels to home additions and full custom builds, we bring the same third-generation craftsmanship to every project. Browse what we do - then call us to talk through yours.

Tolman Home Solutions is a third-generation general contractor based in South Barre, Massachusetts. The family has been building and remodeling homes in this part of the state since 1969, and today Mat Tolman runs the crew that does the work. We are licensed (MA CS-103336), insured, and A+ accredited with the BBB, and we work across Worcester County, MA / Central Massachusetts.

Everything below is work we do ourselves with our own carpenters, not work we sub out and mark up. That matters on remodels in older Central Massachusetts houses, where almost nothing is plumb, level, or built the way the plans said it would be. When we open a wall and find rot, bad framing, or wiring that should not be there, you hear about it that day with a price attached, not at the end of the job.

Below is each service we offer, what it actually involves, and a link to the full page for that trade. If you would rather just talk it through, call (508) 277-0120 and you will get Mat or someone on his crew.

    Kitchen Remodels

Kitchens are the job we get called for most, and they run the whole range: new cabinets and counters in a layout that already works, or a full gut down to the studs when the walls, wiring, and plumbing need to change. We handle the demo, framing, electrical and plumbing coordination, cabinet setting, tile, and trim with our own crew, so one person is answering for the whole job.

Most homeowners come to us with a rough idea and a budget. We walk the space, tell you honestly what the layout will allow, and give you a real number before anything gets torn out. Nothing gets ordered until the plan and the price are settled.

    Bathroom Remodels

Bathroom work covers primary suite builds, hall bath updates, and tub-to-shower conversions in older Central Massachusetts homes where nothing behind the wall is square. Framing, waterproofing, tile, vanities, and finish carpentry are done in house, and we bring in our licensed plumber and electrician on the same schedule.

The part homeowners do not see is the part that matters: proper backer board, a correctly sloped pan, and ventilation that actually moves air out of the house. That is where bathrooms fail five years later, so that is where we spend the time.

    Home Additions

Additions add square footage where moving does not make sense: a bigger kitchen and dining space, a first-floor primary suite, a mudroom and laundry, or a family room off the back of the house. We handle the foundation, framing, roof tie-in, siding, and interior finish so the new space reads like it was always part of the home.

Additions are permit-heavy work, and every town in Worcester County handles it a little differently. We deal with the building department, the inspections, and the schedule so you are not chasing paperwork.

    Custom Home Builds

We build ground-up custom homes on private lots across Central Massachusetts, from site prep and foundation through framing, mechanicals, and finish carpentry. It is a longer relationship than a remodel, usually the better part of a year, and it runs on weekly communication rather than surprises.

You will deal with Mat directly through the whole build, not a rotating list of project managers. That is the advantage of a family shop that has been at this since 1969.

    Decks and Porches

We build new decks and farmers porches, and we rebuild plenty of decks that were framed wrong the first time. Pressure treated, cedar, and composite systems all get the same structural approach: proper footings below frost, correct ledger flashing, and hardware rated for the lumber it is fastened to.

If your existing deck is spongy, pulling away from the house, or sitting on posts that have sunk, we will tell you straight whether it is worth repairing or worth replacing.

    Home Siding

Siding replacement is exterior protection first and curb appeal second. We install vinyl and fiber cement over a properly detailed weather barrier, replace rotted sheathing and trim as we find it, and detail windows and doors so water runs out of the wall instead of into it.

We handle trim, soffit, fascia, and gutter work at the same time, which is usually cheaper than doing it as a separate trip with staging up twice.

    Basement and Attic Remodeling

Finishing a basement or converting an attic is the cheapest square footage you will ever add to a house, because the foundation, walls, and roof already exist. The work that decides whether it lasts happens before the first stud: controlling water, confirming you have the ceiling height, cutting a code-compliant egress window if the room will ever be a bedroom, insulating the foundation correctly, and testing for radon.

We handle all of it, including the permit and the inspections. Attic conversions are the other half of this service, and they come with their own list: floor framing that was never sized for living loads, headroom limited by the roof pitch, and a thermal boundary that has to move from the attic floor up to the rafters.

Whole Home Remodeling and Full House Renovation

A whole home remodel is a different animal than a single room. Wiring, plumbing, heat, insulation, walls, and finishes all move at once, and the order they go in matters more than any material choice. We do this work in older Central Massachusetts homes, where knob-and-tube, galvanized supply lines, and a boiler on its last winter are the norm rather than the exception.

Whether it is a full gut renovation down to the studs or a phased remodel you can live through, you get one licensed contractor answering for the framing, the subs, the schedule, and the inspections. That includes the parts of a home renovation nobody enjoys talking about: stretch energy code compliance, lead RRP on pre-1978 houses, and asbestos testing on anything built before 1980.

    Remodels and Finish Work

Beyond the named services above, a good share of our year is general remodeling and finish work: flooring, drywall and paint, interior doors and trim packages, window and exterior door replacement, insulation, and gutters. Some of it starts as a small repair call from a past client and turns into a room.

If you are not sure which category your project falls into, call. We have been in enough Central Massachusetts houses to tell you quickly whether it is a weekend fix, a two-week job, or something that needs a permit and a real plan.

    Where We Work

We are based in South Barre and most of our jobs are within about an hour of the shop, across Worcester County, MA / Central Massachusetts. Each town has its own building department, its own permit timeline, and its own quirks in the housing stock, so we keep a page for each one with local pricing notes and recent jobs.

How a Project Runs With Us

It starts with a phone call and a site visit. We measure, look at what is behind the finishes where we can, and talk about what you want out of the space. From there you get a written scope and a price broken out by phase, so you can see what the framing costs versus the tile versus the cabinets, and cut or add where it makes sense.

Once you sign, we pull the permits, order the long-lead material, and give you a start date we intend to keep. During the job you get one point of contact and a clean site at the end of every day. Change orders get priced and approved in writing before the work happens, so the number at the end is the number you agreed to.

If you want a rough number before you talk to anyone, use our free project estimator or read through the Learning Hub, where we break down real costs and mistakes we see on job sites. Financing options are on the financing page.
