We start with how you want to use the space. A grilling and dinner deck off the kitchen is a different structure than a screened porch designed for July evenings without mosquitos, which is different again from a covered farmer's porch that needs to shed snow load off a low-slope roof. During the site visit we look at the house framing, existing rim board condition, ledger attachment options, ground conditions, drainage, and how the deck or porch connects to interior door heights, so the finished structure lands where it should and drains water away from the house.

Structure is where a lot of decks fail. We use engineered footings sized for Massachusetts frost depth, properly flashed ledger attachments with the correct fastener schedule, and framing sized for real snow and live loads, not the minimum a big box lumber package includes. Every fastener that stays outside is hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel. Ledger flashing is a full assembly, not a single strip of aluminum, because keeping water out of the band joist is the single most important detail on any attached deck.
