Worcester is the second-largest city in New England, the second-largest city in Massachusetts, and arguably the birthplace of the triple decker. It's also the most diverse residential market in our service area - what works in Greendale doesn't work in Vernon Hill, and what works in Vernon Hill doesn't work on the West Side.

Worcester's housing stock breaks down into a few distinct types. There are the triple deckers - three-story wood-framed multifamily buildings that filled neighborhoods like Vernon Hill, Grafton Hill, Main South, and Quinsigamond Village starting in the 1880s. Many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and roughly 4,000 of the city's original 6,000 still stand. Each of these markets has its own renovation playbook. Triple deckers come with knob-and-tube wiring, lead paint, asbestos pipe insulation, structural porch issues, and condo-conversion considerations. West Side homes have full plaster, period millwork, and the kind of finish work that's worth preserving. Worcester's permitting goes through the Inspectional Services Department at City Hall, and the historic preservation review applies to projects in designated historic districts.
